Program Overview

Youth Summer Camp at UCLA Campus is tailored for children between the ages of 10 to 18.

Children not only experience campus life at UCLA but also participate in specialized English programs led by expert instructors, visit global companies, connect with UCLA students and explore the exciting attractions of Los Angeles.

Program Details

Our English program offers high-quality instruction through collaboration with Mentor Language Institute (MLI), renowned for its 20+ years of experience and exceptional reputation in education.

The English program consists of 15 hours per week.

The primary goal is to enhance communication skills in actual English language environments, with a particular focus on listening and speaking.

"Creating an optimal learning environment based on age groups"

By grouping children with peers of similar ages, we can offer programs and activities that are best suited to their developmental needs and interests. Not only does this approach allow for personalized learning at a comfortable pace, but it also fosters stronger bonds and empathy among classmates.

The journey begins with the "New Student Welcome Event," where students have the opportunity to connect with their fellow campmates and kickstart their camp experience on a positive note. Following this, English placement tests are administered based on age groups, and students are subsequently placed in classes that align with their current English proficiency levels. This tailored approach ensures that your child receives instruction that is both challenging and supportive, leading to noticeable improvements in their English skills over the course of the program.

Junior Level

(10-14 years old)

At the Junior level, our aim is to bolster children's real-world English communication skills, emphasizing listening, speaking, and practical Survival English.

This program lays the groundwork for your child to communicate confidently in international settings and during overseas travel.

Senior Level

(15-18 years old)

At the Senior level, our mission is to empower students with advanced English skills tailored for real-life communication. Our curriculum goes beyond grammar and writing, offering simulated classes to hone college admissions essay writing and presentation speaking skills. We prioritize preparing students for success in both academic and professional settings, enabling them to confidently navigate real-world challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.
What is the recommended attire for camp participation?
A.
Since the camp takes place during summer, it is advisable to wear lightweight and cool clothing during the daytime. Activities during the day often involve short sleeves and shorts. However, nights can get chilly, so it's essential to have long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Bringing a jacket to be prepared for temperature fluctuations is also a good idea.
Q.
What should I prepare for when my child is participating in camp?
A.
The list of items to prepare for camp participation is quite similar to what you would prepare for a general overseas trip. Below is a specific list:
  • Passport (make sure it's valid)
  • Overseas travel insurance documents
  • One week's worth of clothing and underwear & Swimwear
  • Emergency contact card (with the contact information of parents’ or guardians’, home address, email, and phone number)
  • Medications and prescriptions (any medication regularly used, as well as prescriptions for any allergies or chronic conditions)
  • Medical certificates (if there are existing medical conditions or allergies)
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and hat (Los Angeles can be very sunny)
  • Pocket money
  • Translation devices or smartphones (please consider the risk of loss or damage for expensive items)
  • Chargers (for each device)
  • Extra glasses or contact lenses
  • Everyday items (toothbrush, hair ties, handkerchiefs, etc.)
  • Favorite small items (such as stuffed animals or specific snacks for relaxation)
  • Electrical plug adapters (for using electrical appliances)
  • Masks and hand sanitizers
  • Shower slippers
Please consider this list as a reference. If you have any questions or need additional advice, feel free to contact us.
Q.
How should I handle laundry during my stay?
A.

A laundry facility is available on the UCLA campus for students to use. A laundry card can be purchased in cash at the UCLA dorm check-in upon arrival. Cards are available in $5, $10, and $20 increments. ($5 covers one washer and dryer use, and $5 per week is recommended). Laundry detergent is not provided, so packing detergent in a small container is recommended. For participants staying only one week, preparing enough clothing for the week and not doing laundry during their stay may be convenient. Additionally, we will provide a camp T-shirt during their stay (included in the program fee).

Q.
What additional payments are required apart from the program fee?
A.

The program fee already includes the following:

  • 15 hours of English lessons per week
  • Textbook materials used in the lessons
  • Accommodation at UCLA residence
  • Three meals per day and beverages
  • Activity expenses, including amusement parks, museums, and transportation (including ticket fees)
  • Transfer service (pick up and drop off) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Camp T-shirt
  • 24-hour security service
  • Camp chaperone services

The program fee does not include the following costs, which will be required in addition to the program fee:

  • International insurance
  • Airfare
  • Pocket money for your child and souvenir expenses
  • Lunch and dinner money for the theme parks activity days
  • Laundry fee in cash
  • Extended stay fee: $375 per day (including three meals)
  • Airport transfer on days other than the designated arrival and departure dates ($160)
  • Using Unaccompanied Minor Service ($160)

*Except for the above, there are no special additional charges. However, if you have any questions or uncertainties, please feel free to contact us.

Q.
How extensive should the overseas insurance coverage be?
A.

Medical expenses in the United States can be quite high. While the choice of overseas insurance is at your discretion, we strongly recommend selecting coverage that adequately covers medical expenses, considering the risk of high costs if hospital treatment becomes necessary. We suggest looking for insurance plans with No Deductible (no deductible, 100% coverage).

Furthermore, it's a good idea to consider insurance plans that cover theft, hotel expenses in case of disaster, and flight change fees in case of delay.

If you have any questions or need additional advice, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Q.
What is an appropriate amount for pocket money?
A.

The budget for souvenirs and snacks can vary from person to person. The necessary amount can greatly depend on the type and price range of souvenirs. However, carrying a significant amount of cash increases the risk of loss, so we recommend using prepaid cards or credit cards. If you're considering a one-week stay, having at least around $200 would be a reasonable amount. If you plan to purchase a significant number of souvenirs, we suggest determining a budget in advance and then providing your child with pocket money within that range.

Q.
How is the $200 security deposit for the student residence paid and refunded?
A.

Please process the payment of the $200 accommodation security deposit via PayPal (payable to: payment@usssinc.net) before departure. A payment link will be sent to the parent's email before the student's departure.

This deposit is intended to cover any potential damage to the residence room or issues during the camp period.

*After check-out, if there are no claims of damage from UCLA, we will refund $185 to your PayPal within one month (the balance after service fee of $15).

If you have any questions or uncertainties, feel free to reach out for further clarification.

Q.
How should I arrange my plane tickets?
A.

Regarding plane tickets, you can make arrangements based on your preferences. You can consult with the study abroad agency you are associated with or purchase the tickets yourself.

Arrival: It is recommended to book a flight that arrives between 10:00 AM and 5:30PM on Sunday. Please arrange your flight to arrive no later than 8:30 PM.

Departure: Checkout time at UCLA is 9:00 AM on Saturday. Please arrange your flight schedule to depart LAX no later than 5:00 PM.

If you have any questions or need assistance with the arrangements, please feel free to reach out at any time.

Q.
When should I arrive and depart for the camp, and what time should my arrival and departure flights be?
A.

The camp program starts on Sundays. Therefore, it's recommended to plan your arrival in Los Angeles on a Sunday. In exceptional cases where arriving on a Sunday is difficult, it's possible to arrive on the preceding Saturday for an additional cost of $535, which includes extended stay, 3 meals and transfer fees.

Recommended arrival flight time:

Arrival at Los Angeles International Airport between 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM is recommended. There is a welcome event that starts at 7:00 PM, so arriving as early as possible is advisable.

Recommended departure flight time:

Since the checkout time at the UCLA residence is 9:00 AM, it is advisable to choose a departure flight from Los Angeles International Airport that is scheduled for after 12:00 PM and no later than 5:00 PM.

For details or questions regarding arrival and departure at different times, please feel free to consult with us.

Q.
How is allergy or medication management handled if a child has allergies or needs to take medication?
A.

Your child's safety is our top priority. Please provide relevant information regarding allergies and medication when you fill out the application form. This enables our staff to make the necessary preparations and respond promptly in case of emergencies.

Meals are mostly provided buffet-style three times a day. To minimize the risk of allergic reactions, students must be cautious about avoiding foods that they are allergic to. We also offer catering during some off-campus activities. In such cases, based on your child's allergy information, we prepare allergen-free meals separately for your child.

If you have any concerns or special requests, feel free to reach out to us.

Q.
How are unforeseen situations handled during summer camp, such as injuries, illnesses, weather fluctuations, or disasters?
A.

The safety of our participants is our top priority.

Response to injuries and illnesses:

In case of an emergency, a dedicated guardian will take responsibility and address the situation. The UCLA campus has a highly-rated emergency room at UCLA Medical Center, ensuring that quick medical care is available.

Response to disasters:

In the event of a large-scale disaster that makes staying at UCLA difficult, we plan to utilize overseas travel insurance to facilitate safe relocation to a hotel. We will also arrange transportation to that hotel.

Response to weather fluctuations:

Significant weather variations, such as hurricanes, are not expected in Los Angeles in August. However, if inclement weather, like heavy rain, makes outdoor activities challenging, we may consider switching to indoor programs and activities.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.

Q.
Are staff members providing transportation for off-campus activities in their vehicles?
A.

Transportation to off-campus activities primarily involves using chartered buses, and staff will accompany the participants during these journeys. Safety is our top priority, and dedicated staff members will be present on every bus ride. They will conduct roll calls regularly before and after boarding the bus and during transit to ensure the safety of the participants, so you can rest assured.

Q.
What is the ratio of camp participants to staff members?
A.

In our camp, there is one staff member to support every 15 students. This ratio is established to provide individualized support to each child. All staff members receive training for student safety and support, ensuring a safe and enjoyable camp environment for everyone.

Q.
How much English language skill is required for participation?
A.

To participate in our camp, at a minimum, participants should be able to write their own name in English and have a basic understanding of the alphabet. Beyond this, advanced English skills are not required, so even children who are beginners in English can comfortably join.

If you have any other questions or concerns, or if there's anything else you'd like to know, please don't hesitate to ask. Sending your child to this camp is a significant step for parents, so even the smallest doubts or questions are completely understandable. Whether it's questions not covered here, specific details, or advice tailored to your individual circumstances, feel free to reach out for guidance.

We are committed to providing full support to ensure both parents and children have a safe and enjoyable camp experience.
